Amateur Pianists International is a nonprofit organization based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, dedicated to the enrichment and encouragement of fine performance in classical piano literature.
API was formed in 2000 under the leadership of Brig. Gen (Ret.) Charles P. Cabell, with inspiration from the Van Cliburn International Competition for Outstanding Amateurs. API celebrates amateur pianists, those who play and perform in the non-professional realm.
The Rocky Mountain Amateur Piano Competition has been a popular summertime destination for talented amateur pianists from across the country and around the world. Each keyboard artist brings his or her own style and repertoire, creating a variety of performances to please every listener.

Our competition winners have come from as close as Larkspur, CO to as far away as Paris, France. Many of our participants are past winners of other prestigious amateur piano competitions.
We are privileged to be a part of the Colorado College Summer Music Festival for both our Competition and for our biennial Celebration events.
The Rocky Mountain Amateur Piano Competition is held during odd-numbered years. We host a piano Celebration during even-numbered years, with a roster of activities including concerts, workshops and social events to establish or rekindle friendships among pianists and piano enthusiasts. Both the Competition and Celebration events include recitals by renowned concert pianists.
Packard Hall, on the CC campus, offers unparalleled facilities, hallmarked by a performance stage featuring Steinway pianos. Campus housing is available for a nominal fee during both the Competition and Celebration events, offering all amenities, including proximity to Packard Hall.
Amateur Pianists International is a community organization, and we engage local arts personalities to introduce competition rounds. As part of its commitment to the arts scene, All Classical KCME-FM 88.7 airs the recorded final rounds of competition performances.
We take pride in being a friendly, supportive music organization. Amateur Pianists International is led by an enthusiastic board and membership roster, and is recognized as one of the premier cultural events of the summer season in Colorado Springs.
